Put your fingers in your ears – a city child has been declared the loudest in town.
Amira Robinson, nine, visited the Specsavers Bionic Ear Show during its visit to the area and fought off stiff competition by shouting the loudest. She managed a reading of 115 decibels – a noise almost twice the level of normal conversation.
The Specsavers Bionic Ear Show, created and presented by national charity Deafness Research UK, visited schools and venues in Exeter, providing audiences with an interactive tour of our ears.
Dan Hill, hearing aid audiologist at Specsavers’ Hearing Centre in Exeter, said: “It’s estimated that one in seven people are suffering in silence with a hearing loss.
“I hope that, having seen the Specsavers Bionic Ear Show, local residents are more aware of how important it is to look after your hearing and what help is available to them.”
Visitors were able to experience hearing loss by listening to sounds and tunes muffled as though they were being heard through the ears of someone with damage to their hearing.
Presenters Ade Deane- Pratt and Tobin May guided the audience through the inner ear and followed its path through the pinna, ear canal, middle ear, hair cells and, finally, reaching the brain.
Amira now has a wait to see if she will be crowned the loudest child in the UK when the show comes to a close at the end of 2008.

Fixed forex rate in TransCo concession contract seen incurring big loses for NG

The fixed foreign exchange rate incorporated in the concession agreement for the National Transmission Corporation (TransCo) is viewed to be causing massive financial losses for the government.
This, as the concessionaire National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has been enjoined to set its payments to the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation (PSALM) in Philippines pesos while the latter settles its obligations in dollars or foreign currencies.
The 25-year concession agreement for the transmission firm reportedly fixed forex conversion rate at P42 to US$1.00; even if the exchange rate at the time of the asset’s privatization was already at P45 vis-a-vis the greenback. There have also been further fluctuations to P46-P47 range in the past months.
Widely-perceived irregularities in the privatization transaction entered into by PSALM are among those being brought into the attention of the newly created Truth Commission, especially for deals seen disadvantageous
to the government or to the Filipino people who will eventually pay the price for such acts of malfeasance.
“Why did (PSALM) agreed to such an obviously disadvantageous agreement with NGCP when PSALM itself needs the dollars to service the dollar needs of NPC (National Power Corporation) and TransCo,” sources averred.
Under the reported nature of the transaction, it was tipped off to media that the government loses about P3 for every dollar that the concessionaire should have paid upon its assumption of operations of the transmission facilities.
Throughout the 25-year duration of the concession pact, it is estimated that government losses from the transaction may reach a whopping $3 billion; if no improvements favorable to the country’s currency will happen in the conversion rates.
PSALM is also being maligned for throwing the country into fresh round of mounting indebtedness, as its loans soared to as much as $8.0 billion again in recent months.
Former TransCo president Alan T. Ortiz branded it to have been caused by “corruption and mismanagement”, and that somehow defeated the intent and spirit of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) from freeing the de-monopolized NPC from monstrous financial obligations.

NJR Clean Energy Ventures Announces Rooftop Solar Project with Adler Development and United Solar

(NYSE: NJR), today announced an agreement with Adler Development of
Edison, NJ to lease space atop four, fully occupied buildings in central
New Jersey for rooftop solar systems. The $17 million project, developed
with United Solars technical expertise, will be capable of generating
3.9 megawatts of clean, renewable energy and offer lower costs to
tenants while helping to reduce the facilities carbon footprint.
This commercial project represents our latest effort to identify real
opportunities in the solar market, said Laurence M. Downes, chairman
and CEO of NJR. By maximizing underutilized space to provide clean,
renewable energy in the state, we are effectively leveraging our
expertise to help provide savings to our customers as well as meet our
states renewable energy goals, create jobs and grow our company. We

in the solar and renewable energy markets that will benefit our
customers, company and state.
Recognizing the value of green buildings and potential energy savings
for its tenants, Adler, a New Jersey family-owned and operated
development company specializing in warehouse and flex space, will lease
over 900,000 square feet of roof space to NJRCEV for a period of 20
years, helping reduce its facilities carbon emissions by 3,200 tons per
year. Tenants of the buildings will be offered a Power Purchase
Agreement from NJRCEV that is lower than their current utility rates.
United Solar is a leading global manufacturer of UNI-SOLAR brand
light-weight, flexible, thin-film, low-impact and low-profile solar
modules and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices
(NASDAQ: ENER). The building specific, roof-friendly project was
developed using United Solars operational knowledge and technical
proficiency as well as its thin-film technology.
Investments made by NJRCEV will qualify for a 30 percent federal
investment tax credit. In addition, the energy produced will be eligible
for Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs), which can be sold to
Load Serving Entities in New Jersey to meet their renewable energy
requirements. Additional return on investment will be provided by the
Power Purchase Agreement payments from tenants.
